Algemene informatie Viking Race
Jaarlijks organiseert Schaatstrainingsclub Rutten een groot internationaal schaatstoernooi op Thialf in Heerenveen. Dit toernooi staat in de schaatswereld bekend als de Viking Race en wordt gezien als de belangrijkste schaatswedstrijd voor de jeugd in de leeftijd van 11 t/m 16 jaar. Officieus wordt het toernooi ook wel het Europese kampioenschap voor de jeugd genoemd. Aan dit toernooi doen totaal 288 jongens en meisjes in de leeftijd van 11 t/m 16 jaar uit de schaatslanden in Europa mee.

De Viking Race is ontstaan omdat er voor de jeugd geen mogelijkheid was om op internationaal niveau met elkaar de competitie aan te gaan. Met een deelname van 288 schaatsers uit 14 verschillende landen, is de Viking Race uitgegroeid tot de grootste internationale schaatswedstrijd. De wedstrijd wordt jaarlijks vermeld op de internationale schaatskalender van de Internationale Schaats Unie (ISU). Vele oud toernooi-deelnemers zijn nu deelnemers aan Europese- en wereldkampioenschappen of vertegenwoordigden hun land op de Olympische spelen. 

Information Viking Race
Every year Skating Training Club Rutten organizes a major international skating tournament at Thialf in Heerenveen. This tournament is known in the skating world as the Viking Race and is seen as the most important skating competition for youth aged 11 to 16 years. Unofficially, the tournament is also known as the European Youth Championship. A total of 288 boys and girls aged 11 to 16 from the skating countries in Europe participate in this tournament.

The Viking Race was created because there was no possibility for youth to compete with each other at an international level. With a participation of 288 skaters from 14 different countries, the Viking Race has become the largest international skating competition. The competition is listed annually on the international skating calendar of the International Skating Union (ISU). Many former tournament participants are now participants in European and World Championships or have represented their country at the Olympics.
